the mural projectFor my 'day job' I work for King County as a community relations planner on a large public works project. A few years ago one of the project managers—knowing that I was interested in photography—asked if I'd like to create a series of murals for one of the construction sites. The images would go on a screen wall surrounding the site, with the idea of adding some interest and hopefully making the impacts of long-term construction more palatable to the surrounding businesses. Now in its third year (and third series) the murals have been well received by workers, business owners, and the county. The project has challenged me to go beyond my 'amateur' status as a photographer: working towards deadlines, having my work reviewed (and at time rejected) by clients, preparing the digital files for large-format reproduction as vinyl banners, and contracting with people to produce and install the work. |
